Imagine a world where every form you now fill out has a section for "species," and checking off ''vampire'' is a possibility now. Where everything is now open day and night to accommodate all different species, both human and paranormal. Where vampires and werewolves and fae and all the rest are now recognized as legal persons in their own right.

This is the world of the ''Blood Rights Series'' by K. B. Thorne, where the United States has passed legislation to make all of this real--with all the fascinating differences, the boring day-to-day lives, the blowback that such a turn of events would lead to.

The series contains six novella to novel length stories or short story collections, all set in the fictional Connecticut town of Adelheid. Each book in the series is told in First Person narrative, following different narrators, although all the characters are connected to Sadie Stanton and the Stanton Agency in some way. The series takes place approximately from autumn of 2011 to summer of 2016.

VAMPIRES ARE PEOPLE TOO

I’m Sadie Stanton, and I don’t know why everyone makes such a big deal out of me. I’m just like everyone else—I’m trying to start a business, not spending much time on my social life, and dealing with an obnoxious roommate...

Oh, and being a vampire. There’s that. But it’s okay, because we’re all legal now.

But believe me, that doesn’t make life easy. In fact, it might be harder now than ever before, but I did it to myself… And now vampires are attacking people seemingly at random and not even trying to feed.

Everyone is looking to me to help sort out why, but that turns pretty easy into looking for someone to blame.

Fast.

I guess I’ll need to be faster.

BLOOD ISN’T ALWAYS BLOOD

The name is Dakota. No last name. Just that.

I’m a bounty hunter, only I hunt all the things that go bump in the night. The things that others are too afraid to hunt. I live alone. I work alone. That’s how I like it. Other people just mess things up.

Life doesn’t always work the way you want it to, though, does it? Sometimes, things—or people—just get forced on you, and you just have to deal with it. Well, wise guy, how am I supposed to handle hunting an ex-lover and a freakin’ thousand-year-old vampire—at the same time?

I guess I’m about to find out.

I never expected it to become this back when I moved here.

My name is D, and I live in fang central. Never had much use for them, the fangs. Not until a hot chick, a hot car, and a split-second decision because I wished for more in my boring life.

Well, I got it. Sort of.

Now I’ve made some more life-changing, split-second decisions. And apparently, I’m being hunted for it.

My entire life has been framed, it has been created, by eleven months when I was fourteen. It left me scarred in ways no one has ever seen before on the outside, and in ways that no one can see on the inside.

I’m grown up, have a good job as a detective, and a personal life that’s my sister and my pet rabbit. But that’s okay. Now, though… Now… Girls are showing up dead and they have all the scars I have. How am I ever going to handle looking for their killer when at every turn, I’m faced with my past?

And yet, the one who hurt me is dead…so who is doing this to these girls? How am I going to find that out without losing my mind?

WE ARE ADELHEID

We all knew this day was possible. Most of us hoped that it wouldn't happen, that it would just remain in the realm of "maybe" forever...but that hope is gone. It's happened. After years of holding back the tide of hate, somewhere a tiny break has formed in our dam and it looks more possible than ever that Cameron's Law will be ripped away from us.

Violence against us is once again on the rise. We're all terrified. Everything we did, everything we once risked... We have to do it again. Do we even have it in us?

= The Founding of Adelheid =

The land that would become the city of Adelheid lived a varied existence, starting with its purchase from the Mohegan tribe in the early 1700s then belonging to different farmers who recognized themselves as parts of different surrounding townships until a large tract was purchased by a German immigrant Martin Weiss.

He would eventually expand his holdings into a sixty square mile tract where he would found the city of Adelheid in 1897, named for his wife. Martin himself immigrated to the United States in 1848, his wife following in 1851. He would fight for the Union in the Civil War until returning to farming and homesteading with his family until he founded the city.

The history that we now know and are able to impart would be that Martin himself was werewolf and bought his land because of the depth of the magic energy he could feel there. He founded a town with the covert purpose of a place for people like him to come together and live in peace, and now Adelheid continues that tradition, where human and preternatural alike live and work together.

The Stanton Agency was founded by Sadie Stanton in the years following the signing of the Preternatural Rights Act of 2010. As a vampire, she was instrumental--along with Cameron St. John--of bringing the proposal forward and seeing it through to become law, recognizing preternatural species as legal entities as they are. After St. John was murdered by anti-preternatural activists, Sadie became even more determined to bring awareness to the human world about her kind and other supernatural beings. She founded the agency to help the supernatural community and help the human community with supernatural matters.

Although D hasn't been a vampire for very long, he's found a home here at the Stanton Agency. He helps protect the business's animator when she's out on jobs and the anti-preter activists come out to harrass her. When not guarding, he helps the office stay in top technological shape.

Lucia is the animator for the agency. If there's a corpse you need raised, she's the one to do it. With abilities just below full necromancy, there's few jobs she doesn't have to power to fulfill.

==== Donovan O'Malley, Demon Summoner ====
Sometimes, you need a little otherworldly help. A "demon" can be summoned to help you out. These are just beings from other planes, not their evil namesakes, and you can strike an exchange of favors. Donovan has been summoning since childhood and has an expansive repertoire of planes he can contact.

==== Bill Coffen, Lawyer in Demonic Law ====
No business with a summoner is complete without a lawyer, because demons are all very particular about the deals they'll strike and at what terms, so one needs a lawyer versed in demonic law and Bill is our man for that job.

==== Vance Johnston, Detective with Adelheid P.D. ====
Vance is the senior detective in the Adelheid P.D. who also happens to be Sadie's husband. This rare hybrid (vampire/were-tiger) has a similar mission to Sadie's, with an extra dose of seeking justice and safety for his town.

==== Samantha Moore, Detective with Adelheid P.D. ====
Samantha is also a detective who also is the only psychometric on the force, which means she can read impressions from inanimate objects and sometimes get clues about what, where, and who that object interacted with.

==== Carl Wright, Medical Examiner ====
Carl is the medical examiner for the state's preternatural department and is based near Adelheid.

==== Jackson Lang, Special Agent with the FBI's Preternatural Subdivision ====
Jackson is a pyrokinetic (fire-user) who is an agent with the FBI's preternatural sub-division, with a satellite office in New London, CT.

==== Posey Kai, Special Agent with the FBI's Preternatural Subdivision ====
Posey is Jackson's partner in the FBI.

==== Jade, Vampire Coven Leader ====
Many of the vampires in Adelheid belong to the coven, which is like a social club for vamps. Jade is its long-time leader.

Like vampires, many of the local werewolves belong to the local pack. Gabriel is their leader.

Formerly a detective with the police department, Nykk changed careers to help advocate for victims--human and preternatural alike.

In February of 2009, a young Harvard Law student named Cameron St John convinced a congressman from Massachusetts to propose a bill to the House of Representatives that would make preternatural beings legal citizens of the United States. Cameron was a werewolf. The congressman was human, but was married to a werewolf. (This was how they knew each other.)

Naturally, the bill was met with derisiveness and incredulity. Cameron and the congressman's wife, however, were able to convince the House that this was a real bill and the strangest series of government talks began and led to conflict in government and in the people unlike anything seen since the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. In both places, the path followed was parallel.

(Like the civil rights act, the commerce clause was put into affect again.)

The bill began in the House and moved to Committee to Hearings to Vote. It passed in the House and moved to the Senate, where it went to Committee to Debate to Vote. It passed again and moved to Dual Conference to Adoption/Passing and finally was Signed into law on May 6, 2010, roughly fifteen months after the process began.

During the Hearings in the House, several preternaturals came forward and allowed themselves to be tested medically to assure that they were what they said they were. Protests began both for and against the motion. The preternatural gathered and organized. There were petitions and the media used. They spoke at the Hearings, pleading to be recognized as legal beings like anyone else. There were 'preternatural sit-ins' where preternaturals in human and animal forms would silently protest their right to be alive and be present, and would often be joined by human supporters.

Cameron was the leading edge of the movement, but his vampire girlfriend - Sadie Stanton - was not far behind him. There were others, but these two led the charge, in many ways.

Cameron's Biography: He was born Delaware in 1982, but moved to Massachusetts to attend school. He was born as a werewolf to a wolf father and human mother. He was a member of Law Review at Harvard and an A student. He began dating Sadie shortly after heading to school, in late 2007.

Protests on the 'against' side were vicious and violent. Many preternaturals who came forward were attacked, and few even fought back. They were afraid that any injuries from their side would damage their cause. Deaths were very rare, thanks to their healing, but they did happen on a few tragic occasions. Some humans who supported them were targets as well, but to a lesser degree.

One of these tragic deaths would, sadly, be Cameron himself. While out on a celebratory dinner after hearing news that the bill had been adopted, they were attacked. Sadie barely survived, but Cameron wasn't so lucky. He died at the age of twenty-eight, just weeks before the President signed the bill into Law and before he would have graduated from Harvard Law.

Lucia is the animator for the agency. If there's a corpse you need raised, she's the one to do it. With abilities just below full necromancy, there's few jobs she doesn't have to power to fulfill.

Despite many popular misconceptions gathered over the centuries, no preternatural species is inherently good or evil. Each individual is precisely that: an individual. They are unique and possess free will. Like humans, they are faced with decisions every moment of every day and it's the choices they make which determine whether they are good or bad, whether they do good acts or bad ones.

Whether or not preternatural beings have a 'soul' as understood in human beliefs is a debate pertaining to scholars and philosophers, but suffice it to say that they have free will to make their own choices and they have to deal with the consequences.

Basically, they are just like humans, but with a few extra quirks.

= Vampires =

Vampires are not immortal, because they can be killed. They are simply very difficult to kill and if they are not killed, they will live forever, so they are considered eternal. The life span of a vampire can be described like Newton's First Law of Motion: that a body at rest tends to remain at rest, and a body in motion tends to remain in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. A vampire will live forever, if not acted upon by a specific outside force.

When broken down to the most basic facts, vampires are dead. They have no heartbeat or blood pressure; they do not breathe and have no internal body temperature of their own. Like a snake, they will adapt to the temperature of their surroundings. Without a blood pressure, no cut actually bleeds but there is generally the pull of gravity that will draw blood to ooze from an open wound.

There are very specific ways to kill a vampire: a wooden stake (any kind of wood) through the heart, exposure to direct sunlight or beheading. They suffer an "allergy" to silver, so an abundance of wounds made by a silver weapon will greatly diminish or stop their healing process and can kill them eventually. Being chopped into many little pieces or being thrown into a vat of acid that dissolves the entire body will do the job as well.

Their bodies have a hyper-accelerated ability to mend itself. They are immune to all known/human diseases, they can't be carriers, and they are immune to poisons. They are exceptionally strong, fast and reflexive; perhaps as much as twice that of a human, or more.

A vampire gains strength as they age. They are not, however, immune to pain, soreness, discomfort, fatigue or weakness, but their natural threshold is much higher.

During daylight hours, a vampire will fall into a sleep specific to vampires. It's a sleep so deep that it is comparable to death, or the deepest of comas. Nothing can wake them. This state is compared to a reversion to their "normal" death state, but without the rotting. It lasts through all day time hours. An older vampire will be able to wake sooner into dusk and stay 'awake' later into the dawn, but once the sun is fully up, every vampire will be asleep.

They are not adversely affected by any religious symbols. They can see themselves in mirrors, do not need an invitation to walk into a home and can cross running water under their own power and without any adverse reaction.

Vampires do need to drink blood to survive, but it's not required that it be human blood or directly from a living source. It can be from a butcher and even chilled long term. They can drink blood that is infected by disease without issue. A pint to a quart will serve them for two to three days. When injured, more blood will help increase their healing ability. They cannot eat or drink anything else, with the exception of water, because their dead bodies cannot handle or process it. (They will regurgitate it.)

They do not have the ability to shift form. There is no turning into any kind of animal or into mist. The only shifting that takes place is their teeth. Although always somewhat longer and sharper, a vampire's fangs will recede when not in use. When the vampire is about to feed, is feeling threatened or aroused, their fangs will descend.

To make a new vampire, one must be Turned. No vampires are born, because vampires have no physical secretions with which to make a child. To be Turned, the creator vampire (called a sire) shares their blood with another being. It can be once or multiple times. When that person dies, they may Turn into a vampire, but there is always a chance it won't take. More often than not it will. When a vampire dies, the body remains. They do not turn to dust.

Some vampires Turn with abilities. There is no predicting who will and who won't, nor what ability it might be. These abilities might be the ability to control a certain type of animal, to heal others (very, very rare) or what would be called the succubus or incubus, which is a vampire that can control sexual power/desire and use it to control people, to a degree. (This list of abilities is not exhaustive of what powers a vampire may be Turned with.)

A vampire's sexuality is controlled entirely by their minds rather than by any shifting of blood flow. The theory is that the body has a 'memory' of sexual experiences that the mind can act on, which allows male vampires to achieve erections and both genders to achieve arousal to orgasm without conscious direction, although there are no natural secretions. A female vampire must have artificial lubrication for ease and comfort, although her body will otherwise accommodate the act like a human's.

Politically, there is a coven in each major city. Covens operate on a monarchy-style hierarchy with one vampire being the 'ruler' of the coven, although modern life and legality have eased the 'dictatorship' style ruling of old fashioned covens. Smaller surrounding cities and towns may have vampires affiliated with the coven. Whether joining a coven is required is something dictated by each individual group and its leader.

= Shapeshifters/Shifters/Werecreatures =

Shapeshifters (shape-shifters), or werecreatures (were-creatures), can be born or Turned. The virus can be transmitted via salvia, in human or animal form. It's rarer to become a shifter by this method, but possible, so a shifter should be careful of biting a human, even playfully, to not break skin. Biologically, two shifter parents will always produce a shifter child. If one parent is human, the chance is fifty-fifty. If the parents are both shifters but with different animal forms, it's fifty-fifty which animal form the child will take, but it will be one or the other. There are no hybrids.

Every shapeshifter has two forms: human and animal. The animal form is entirely animal, no human/animal half or hybrid forms. They will always be the same animal. The animal form is always larger, stronger and quicker than the 'natural' form of said animal, just like the human form is stronger, quicker and has more stamina than the average human. In animal form, they will think, feel and reason with a human mind.

The animal form is always a predator, which can mean wolves, bears, tigers, hawks, and so on. All possible forms are not documented, but it is known that wolves are most common and the various cat species are second on the list. The rest tend to be rare.

With the full moon, a shifter must transform into their animal self at least once. Older shifters can hold it off longer than the younger, but they cannot avoid it entirely. The body will force it before the night is done and usually by the midnight hour.

Shifting is never a clean occurrence, and is painful for the shifter. Clothing worn is shredded and it takes several moments to complete. A shapeshifter is not able to shift until puberty. The first shift is part of the process. A strong shifter can half-shift and then turn back before completing it.

Shifters are neither eternal nor immortal. Their healing is accelerated and they are immune or resistant to many diseases and poisons. They also age a little slower. All shifters have an allergy to silver. It diminishes their body's healing ability and causes great pain. Enough wounds from a silver weapon, even if the wounds themselves are not fatal, will kill a shifter much like anaphylactic shock.

Almost every method to kill a human will kill a shifter. Shifters just happen to be stronger and more resistant, so they are harder to kill. When a shifter is killed in animal form, they will revert to human.

Politically, there is typically a pack (werewolves) in each major city. Others in surrounding cities may belong to it as well, and a member of a pack who lives away from home for a time will retain their affiliation even over distance. The inner structure of the pack and whether being part of it is obligatory is up to each group and its leaders (alphas).

There are scattered prides (werelions) throughout the U.S., but other werecreatures are typically solitary and unassociated. The human tends to follow the animal's social instincts. The structure of a pack or pride is a unique blend of animal and human behaviors, and details vary from group to group.

When it comes to reproduction, shifters follow human patterns, unless they have been living solely in their animal form for a long period of time. (The feral shifter is another matter all together.) Female shifters do not go into heat to reproduce and they have human gestation periods. During a pregnancy, the full moon loses its power over the shifter and by the second trimester, they are unable to shift until after giving birth.

= Humans/Animators/Summoners/Psychics =

Humans are, of course, always human, but some humans are born with paranormal abilities.

There are animators, who can raise the dead into zombies for limited periods of time, and control them. The next level from that are the necromancers, which means better and more extensive control as well as the ability to raise more than one at a time and control over vampires, who are technically dead. This level of power is rare.

There are summoners who can summon demons from other plans of existence.

There are the psychics, also called sorcerers or witches. They have a wide range of possible abilities and varying levels of power. Some of these abilities include telepathy, empathy, telekinesis, pyrokinesis, psychometry, or several rarer abilities.

= Lesser Known Species =

There are several preternatural species that have been so rarely seen or documented that we know little about them, or that they are so widely varied that no single set of rules applies.

=== The Theriomorph ===
Theriomorphs are shifters who are not confined to a single secondary form; they can change into any person form or animal form they wish, as long as they have familiarity with it. They do it instantly and cleanly, unlike werecreatures, and any inanimate object on/touching their body at the time of the transformation goes back and forth with them.

The moon has no sway over them. They are stronger and swifter than 'normal' people and animals, heal as fast as shapeshifters and are immune to diseases. They are allergic to silver. They can also exhaust themselves to dangerous levels by too many transformations too close together without proper rest in between. They are not immortal, but by what little we know of them, they seem to be eternal.

=== The Fae ===
Fae are secretive, so not much is known about them. Even when a fae acknowledges what they are, they rarely share anything about their abilities with non-fae. They are eternal, possibly true immortals, and can use their magic to blend in so seamlessly with humans that you'll never know they're there. There are many different 'types' and each have different powers and abilities.

=== Demons ===
The source of demons is varied. Some are the descendants of the original 'fallen angels' and while they are not inherently evil (they have free will), religious symbols do have an adverse affect on them.

Other demons share similarities in abilities with these kinds of demons, but come from places unknown and they'll never tell. (It's generally believed that they live on other planes of existence.) They are named demons for the similarities, and a lack of anything else to call them, although demonologists have defined them into 'categories' of abilities, apparent types and how to summon them.

They are varied in how they look, how they act and what they are able to do. The two things that seem to hold true is that they are eternal, with some being possibly immortal, and that they are all tricksters of a sort--you have to choose your words carefully when dealing with them--though if they make a deal, they stick to it.

A summoner can 'call up' a demon of a specific type and ask it to do a task. If it agrees, a lawyer specifically trained in dealing with demons will draw up a contract that will bind the demon to its agreement and give it no room for its usual trickster habits.

=== Angels ===
The assumption that if there are demons, there are angels has--to date--not yet proven true, as we've seen no proof of angelic existence on the earthly plane.

= The Founding of Adelheid =

The land that would become the city of Adelheid lived a varied existence, starting with its purchase from the Mohegan tribe in the early 1700s then belonging to different farmers who recognized themselves as parts of different surrounding townships until a large tract was purchased by a German immigrant Martin Somebody.

He would eventually expand his holdings into a sixty square mile tract where he would found the city of Adelheid in 1897, named for his wife. Martin himself immigrated to the United States in 1848, his wife following in 1851. He would fight for the Union in the Civil War until returning the harming and homesteading with his family until he founded the city.

The history that we now know and are able to impart would be that Martin himself was werewolf and bought his land because of the depth of the magic energy he could feel there. He founded a town with the covert purpose of a place for people like him to come together and live in peace, and now Adelheid continues that tradition, where human and preternatural alike live and work together.
